Does anyone know where the term PWD originated?
keywords: PWD
Section:  General Diabetes

I have a question about  "PWD".

Does anyone know where PWD originated?

It is surely better than calling people "diabetics", but I would still rather use "people with diabetes".

I wonder how others feel about the use of "PWD"

Re: Does anyone know where the term PWD originated?

I don't know where it originated, but I googled PWD and found a site that lists definitions by acronyms:  http://www.acronymfinder.com/PWD.html

It lists 32 different definitions including these:

password
public works department
portuguese water dog
print working directory (Unix command)
present working directory
Philadelphia Water Department
People with disability (Australia)
plywood (architectural)
person with a disability
Parkway Drive (band)
pocket ord (Microsoft)
People with diabetes
Pinewood Derby

In a world where 140 characters is the maximum we can tweet, PWD makes sense, but only if you know the context!

Thanks, Lyn. Do you know when it started being used to refer to people with diabetes?
