'Fat Chefs" (New Food Network Show) Tackles Obesity Issues and T2DM!
Section:  General Diabetes

Wow!  You won't believe this!

We've come full circle here on the heels of Paula Deen and the media frenzy over her weight, her T2DM, and her celebrity status on the Food Network!

There's now a brand new show being premiered on the Food Network called "FAT CHEFS".  It's all about TREATING the obesity and the medical co-morbidities of obesity, including T2DM!!

The show will be tackling the dangers of obesity and T2DM among chefs head on and will use medical professionals on the show to set these morbidly obese chefs on the road to recovery and health.

"Fat Chefs” will follows participant chefs for 16 weeks as they struggle to lose weight and learn a healthier way of life with the help of trainers, nutritionists and therapists.

"You have this abundance of food all around you," said pastry chef Michael Mignano, who's one of the dozen “fat chefs”, most of whom have been diagnosed with T2DM.

Mignano (36 y/o) owns a bakery. At 6’, he weighed about 500 pounds soon after he was diagnosed with T2DM in 2010, before "Fat Chef" went into production last October. His resolve to do something about his weight grew stronger as the result of a different Food Network show on which he appeared in September, "Sweet Genius."

He lost 100 # by eating lean protein, vegetables and exercising daily with the help of his diabetes care team, and now weighs about 400 pounds; his BG is now at 70 mg, but he says he has a long road ahead to reach his goal weight of 250 #. "Watching myself on that show, I was the fat guy. That's all I saw. I felt almost like a drunk seeing himself on the floor passed out."

As a pastry chef, Mignano said his problem wasn't so much the chocolate he was surrounded by. It was the junk food he'd slam down before and after work.

Below is a pic of Micheal with his "health consultant".  It was copied from an article written by Leanne Italie, and posted at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/24/fat-chef-food-network_n_1229080.html on 01/24/12

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK OF THIS "NEW TWIST" ??? !!

Re: 'Fat Chefs

I call it a cheap chinese knockoff of the crappy biggest loser program aimed at foodies. The biggest loser has been around for years and they keep on getting bigger people. It appears the show really isn't influencing much of america.  Same with all the competion shows that this caliber of networks produce. cheap useless entertainment.

I don't see this as being relevent to us or anyone other than fat chefs

Re: 'Fat Chefs

You must be reading my mind, Mary Ann. I was thinking it is about time to have a show demonstrating positive lifestyle examples. A lot of people like those reality shows.  Seeing the results in the individuals on the show may be aq great motivator for some. They seem to be using some health professionals too. I think it is important to have a mix of health professionals and non-health professionals wih the needed lifestyle changes for good health.

I hope this trend continues....maybe we should start our own program ...like a Dr Oz show
