NutriZine on Diabetes Online Community (DOC)
keywords: DOC
Section:  General Diabetes

Thanks Hope for another informative NutriZine. It's really helpful for me to learn more about the folks behind the various DOC and to hear their views. This one from Scott Johnson really hits home when he talked about 'filling the gaps':

Scott Johnson, PWD, diabetes advocate and creator of scottsdiabetes.com said:
"The DOC fills the gaps between HCP appointments for further education, learning about new therapies/approaches and the ever-present need for emotional support and encouragement."

The folks from various DOC suggest that CDEs and other health professionals join 1-2 DOC to find out what's going on, and even contribute to the discussion. I haven't done this yet because I've felt inundated with the Internet, but this NutriZine gave me the last needed push.

I went to scottsdiabetes.com and read his post http://scottsdiabetes.com/2012/01/overnight-basal-rate-testing/ about a recent overnight basal rate test. He explains the rationale for the test in an easy to understand manner, and his description of what it's like to actually do the overnight testing is excellent. Since I don't have diabetes, I learn from my clients and boy did I learn from Scott's post. The most important thing I took away from this is a quote on the blog from his friend Dan:  "If you can own the night, you can also own a majority of the day AND the weekend! Keep at it! It sucks, but it will help!"

I'm going to post this in my office - Keep at it! It sucks, but it WILL help.

Lynn -

What a sweet note. I'm going to pass it on to Scott Johnson. I'm sure he will enjoy it!

Scott wrote a fantastic blog today where he weaves in a statement from one of the Lord of the Rings movies and applies it to living with diabetes. It's priceless and insightful and I think should be required reading for every CDE:  http://scottsdiabetes.com/2012/01/simply/#comment-39830

As a PWD, I also enjoy reading sixuntilme.com by Kerri Sparling.. She always articulates my feelings about having type 1 diabetes so well!

Thanks for sharing this blog Karen. I couldn't figure out the name of the blog, so of course I finally read the section on what it means. I'm not going to give it away, because I think everyone here should read it. After you do, please post.
