PRESENT Interview Briefs from the AADE 2010 Conference

PRESENT e-Learning Systems has again brought it's remote operations to the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) meeting in San Antonio, Texas to record a series of video interviews with key conference presenters. This meeting is AADE’s  Annual Meeting which attracts diabetes educators from various disciplines including Dietitians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Behaviorists and Exercise Specialists. PRESENT Diabetes Nutrition Editor, Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDE, and PRESENT Diabetes Nursing Editor Joy Pape, RN, BSN, CDE, WOCN, CFNC, interviewed notable and influential meeting presenters such as Keith Campbell RPh, CDE, Deborah Fillman, AADE President, and Past President Ginger Kanzer-Lewis, RN, EdM, CDE, FAADE. Gary Scheiner, MS, CDE is an exercise specialist by background and a person with type 1 diabetes for a quarter century. Gary is the owner and Clinical Director of Integrated Diabetes Services, a diabetes management and education service for people with diabetes who use insulin. Integrated Diabetes Services provides individualized consultation and counseling just outside of Philadelphia as well as virtually around the world. Gary presented a program at AADE titled: Managing Glycemia During Sports and Fitness Activities, which offered valuable insights and information for working with people on insulin who exercise.

Kathleen Osborn is the mother of  a 27 years old daughter, who has had type 1 diabetes for 16 years.  Kathleen is also the  Principal Clinical Study Scientist for 
Tolerx,  a world leader in understanding the function of T cells and developing novel therapies that treat autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and cancer by specifically modulating T cell activity. Watch and learn about type 1 diabetes and autoimmunity, a clinical study to preserve beta cell function, and  a mother who changed careers to diabetes research to help people newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Sandra Drozdz Burke, PhD, APRN, CDE, BC-ADM, FAADE, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Health Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Director of the nursing program at Urbana Regional Program. Sandi has just recently become AADE’s President-elect, 2011-2012 and will serve as President, 2012-2013. She presented two programs at the 2010 AADE meeting. One focused on encouraging diabetes educators to use AADE developed guidelines and competencies to guide their practice. The other program focused on working with people of varied cultures. Sandi shared her excitement about becoming part of AADE’s leadership team the first of the year.

Ann Constance, MA, RD, CDE is a dietitian and diabetes educator who works in the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network in Michigan where she is engaged with diabetes education efforts and improving the lives of people with diabetes. Ann has been a tireless advocate on behalf of people with diabetes and diabetes educators in the state of Michigan and nationally with AADE’s efforts. She provided her many years of learnings in the AADE program, What No One Ever Told You About Being a Diabetes Educator: You Need to Talk to Legislators - Often! She shared her key messages with us as well as her observations of hot topics at this annual meeting.

Hope Warshaw, MMSc, RD, CDE, BC-ADM, owner of Hope Warshaw and Associates, is a best selling author in field of diabetes, and the Nutrition editor for PRESENTdiabetes.com. Hope co-presented a program at AADE titled: Focus on Fibers: Beneficial Effects Across the Continuum of Metabolic Dysfunction. Karl Vanderwood, MPH, who is the Program Manager
 in the Montana Diabetes Project, and Marci K. Butcher, RD, CDE, who is the Quality Diabetes Education Initiative Coordinator in the Montana Diabetes Project, presented a program at AADE titled Implementing the Diabetes Prevention Program in the Real World: The Montana Prevention Program Experience. In this program and in their interview they shared their successful results and key learnings. They also provide perspective on the diabetes prevention initiatives going on across the country through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Martha (Marti) Funnell, MS, RN, CDE, by day is a Research Investigator at the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center in Ann Arbor. Marti also has many hats as a volunteer. She has recently taken the position as Chair of the National Diabetes Education Program of the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Marti presented an AADE program and discussed with us NDEP’s recent project to develop criteria for and a database of materials to the essential behavior change necessary for good diabetes care. Marti also shared her pleasure at seeing the patient-centered model, which she has advocated for over many years, pervasively discussed at this year’s AADE meeting.
