Medical nutrition therapy is one of the cornerstones of treatment in the management of gestational diabetes. Recently, the American Dietetic Association published nutrition practice guideline for women with gestational diabetes that are evidence-based. This lecture will discuss the recommendations for incorporating medical nutrition therapy in gestational diabetes management, which includes weight gain recommendations, calorie intake, and carbohydrate type, amount and distribution. It will conclude with a discussion on postpartum strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes and the recurrence of gestational diabetes in subsequent pregnancies.

Goal and Objective
After participating in this activity, the viewer should be better able to:
1. Describe the major recommendations for medical nutrition therapy in GDM
2. Recognize the scale used to rate the recommendations according to the quality of the supportive evidence.
3. Know how to incorporate the nutrition practice guideline into the management of gestational diabetes
4. Discuss strategies for lowering the risk for the development of GDM recurrence and type 2 diabetes in women with previous GDM
