This lecture by Alyce Thomas, RD. will discuss the current detection and diagnostic criteria of gestational diabetes established by the American Diabetes Association focusing on the current definition of gestational diabetes and the screening and diagnostic criteria that is still used by various medical organizations. The lecture then describes three studies that show beneficial evidence in the treatment and management of gestational diabetes. This is followed by a discussion of the screening and diagnosing criteria during and following pregnancy. Lastly, the lecture will discuss areas of future research in gestational diabetes.

Goal and Objective
After participating in this activity, the viewer should be better able to:
1. Define gestational diabetes.
2. Describe the American Diabetes Association’s criteria for the detection and diagnosis of hyperglycemia in pregnancy.
3. Discuss three studies that have led to the development of the new criteria for diagnosing gestational diabetes.
4. Describe the impact of the increased incidence of women diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the United States.
