This lecture discusses the noninvasive evaluation of vascular disease with a specific focus on the effects of peripheral vascular disease in diabetics. Dr. Hamdan describes the necessary components of a vascular exam, appropriate history and vascular lab tests. This lecture should serve as a practical guide to the evaluation of patients with and without PVD. It includes a description of the standard tests such as Doppler studies, pulse volume recordings and ABIs. In addition, it includes some of the important differences that are seen in patients with diabetes mellitus. After reviewing the lecture the podiatrist should have a better understanding of the initial approach to a patient with vascular disease and/or a foot lesion and a understanding of what non-invasive tests are available.
