Derek LeRoith MD, an international expert on diabetes mellitus, offers a thorough and informative overview on type 2 diabetes. He reviews the pathophysiology and natural history of the disease. Emphasis is placed on the roles of insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion, as well as the affect of glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity. Key clinical evidence in the prevention of type 2 diabetes is also discussed.

Goal and Objective
After participating in this activity, the viewer should be better able to:
1. Describe the pathophysiology of Type I vs Type II Diabetes Mellitis (DM).
2. Differentiate the patient characteristics of Type I DM vs. Type II DM patients.
3. Identify the defect in insulin secretion in Type II DM.
4. Become familiar with the history of the development of Type II DM in our patients and identify the period of pre-diabetes.
