This lecture first reviews the assessment of renal function
and the role of protein in diabetic kidney disease.
This is followed by a discussion of the advantages and potential problems
with high protein diets for weight loss and type 2 diabetes management.

Goal and Objective
After participating in this activity, the viewer should be better able to:
1. To define the effects of protein ingestion on glucose and insulin concentrations in persons with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
2. To review protein recommendations in persons with diabetes and normal renal function and usual protein sources.
3. To discuss the role of protein in the management of diabetic kidney disease.
4. To list the potential advantages and problems with high-protein diets for weight loss/maintenance and diabetes management.
